Elle a ouvert ses portes en 1851 en tant que bibliothèque publique mais n’est plus ouverte au public.
Sa structure en fer a été conçue pour supporter le stockage de 900.000 livres, et son plafond de verre pour laisser entrer un maximum de lumière.
Jusqu’en 1932, un système de tuyaux acheminait les livres demandés, depuis le stockage des étages supérieurs jusqu’au comptoir du hall.

Queen’s famous singer Freddy Mercury would have cerlainly loved this performance by Surrey-Harmony Choir.
He has not received during his life the Knight title by the Queen of England … who later apparently regretted – this title can only be given to a living person, and two other members of the band have received it.
According to Guiness World Records, Queen remains the music artists who have stayed the longest in the music charts :
